File Prep
Submitting projects in a Preferred File Format saves you time and money.
Adobe InDesign 2.0+
- InDesign File
- Fonts Folder
- Links Folder
- PDF (screen resolution 72dpi)
Use 1/8” (.125) even bleeds
QuarkXpress 4+
- Include linked artwork, font files and a screen-resolution PDF.
- Use File->Collect for Output to create a folder with all these files.
- Use 1/8” (.125) even bleeds.
- Distill at High Quality setting (at least 300dpi) and Embed Fonts.

- No Bleeds: Send 1-up, no crop marks.
- Bleeds: Send 1-up, .125” bleeds, with crop marks
- Send original files if possible. Make sure photos are CMYK.
Photoshop TIF or EPS
- Include fonts. If there is vector information, such as shapes and fonts, also save as a Photoshop EPS. For photos, save as a TIF.
- 4-color: 300 dpi CMYK (Image ->Mode->CMYK Color)
- 1-color: 300 dpi Grayscale and tell your sales rep which PMS color
- 2-color jobs: Ask your sales rep
Adobe Illustrator (.ai)/Macromedia FreeHand (.fh) EPS
Your file should have two layers: one with outlined text and one with editable text (hide this layer) Remove all unused colors. If your file has bitmap images such as TIFs, link (instead of embedding) and include the files separately (see TIF specs in #4). Save as EPS. For 4-color process jobs, convert all spot colors to process. Use 1/8” (.125) even bleeds and crop marks. CorelDraw (.cdr) files should be exported to Illustrator (.ai) format.

Adobe PageMaker
Because PageMaker files may not print correctly, we strongly recommend upgrading to InDesign. Adobe no longer supports PageMaker. For PageMaker versions 6.0 and up, adobe.com is offering upgrades to InDesign for $199.
Microsoft Publisher
Most Publisher files require extra time as they may need to be rebuilt for printing. Include linked artwork and font files. Embedded artwork will not print clearly. Make a PDF or submit a printed sample.
Microsoft Word
Most Word files require extra time as they need to be rebuilt for printing. Include embedded artwork and font files (C:/Windows/Fonts). Make a PDF or submit a printed sample.
